Who we are

Metric Owl Ltd (“we”, “us”) runs metricowl.co.uk. We're a company registered in England and Wales, number 17067894, and our registered office is on that Companies House record. Marc Alexander runs the company.

We decide how your personal data is used, which makes us its controller under UK data protection law. We're registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, reference ZC228446. For any question about your data, email [email protected].

What we collect

When you get in touch

• The contact form:
  • your name, work email and message
  • if you give them, your website and telephone number
  • the service you're asking about, and any call times and meeting format you pick
  • the page you sent it from
  • a random reference for that form, so the enquiry can be matched with how the site was used
• Emails and calls: whatever you choose to send or tell us.

When you use the tracking checker

• The page address you enter is sent to Google PageSpeed Insights, which loads that page and returns the results.
• If you choose “Send to Marc”, we receive:
  • your email address
  • the address you checked
  • the findings

When you visit the site

• Our hosting provider records technical details of each request, such as your IP address, browser and the page asked for, to run and protect the site.
• To show the right version of the cookie banner, the site checks which country your IP address is in as each page is sent. The country isn't stored.
• Depending on your cookie choices, analytics and advertising tools record how you use the site. The cookie policy lists them.

When you're a client

We collect the contact and billing details we need to agree the work, deliver it and invoice for it.

We don't ask for special category data, such as health information, and please don't send it.

How we use it, and why we're allowed to

We don't send marketing emails, and we don't sell your data.

Engagement scoring

With analytics cookies on, the site gives each browser a score for how much of the site it has looked at: pages, time, reading and whether the contact form was opened. We use it to understand which visits turn into enquiries. It isn't linked to your name, and no decision about you is made from it automatically.

Who we share it with

We use these services to run the business. They handle your data on our behalf and under contract:

• Netlify: hosts the website, and receives contact form and tracking checker messages and delivers them to us by email, after checking them for spam with Akismet.
• Resend: sends the short automatic email confirming we've received your contact form message.
• Stape: hosts the server at nest.metricowl.co.uk that passes the site's analytics data on to Google.
• Google:
  • Gmail, for our email
  • Google Tag Manager, which loads the site's measurement tools
  • Google Analytics, for site measurement
  • PageSpeed Insights, for the tracking checker
• Microsoft Clarity: shows how pages are used, if you allow it.
• Meta and LinkedIn: advertising measurement, only if you allow it. They also use the data under their own policies.
• Our accounting provider.

We share data with authorities only when the law requires it.

International transfers

Some of these providers are based in, or use servers in, the United States. When your data goes outside the UK, it's protected in one of these ways:

• the provider is certified under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (the “UK-US data bridge”)
• the provider has signed the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum

How long we keep it

• Enquiries: as long as needed to deal with them and any work that follows.
• Client and invoice records: six years after the end of the financial year they relate to, as UK company law requires.
• Analytics data: kept in Google Analytics for the period set there, then deleted.
• Cookies: each lasts as long as the cookie policy says.

Keeping it safe

The site is served only over an encrypted connection. Access to enquiries and client data is limited to Metric Owl. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can:

• ask for a copy of your data
• ask for it to be corrected or deleted
• ask us to limit how we use it
• object to our using it, including for analytics
• ask for it in a format you can take elsewhere
• withdraw consent at any time. This doesn't affect what we did before you withdrew it.

Email [email protected]. We'll reply within one month. For cookies, you can change your choices yourself at any time in Cookie settings.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Children

The site is for businesses and isn't aimed at children. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
