GA4 event name checker.

Paste in your event and parameter names, and see which ones GA4 won't accept, which ones it treats as something else, and how to fix them.

What it checks.

  • Length: event and parameter names can be up to 40 characters.
  • Characters: names must start with a letter and use only letters, numbers and underscores. No spaces or hyphens.
  • Capitals: GA4 names are case sensitive, so Purchase and purchase are two different events.
  • Reserved names: events GA4 collects itself, such as click and form_submit, and prefixes Google keeps for its own use.
  • Near misses: names that look like a recommended event but aren't, such as generateLead or add_to_card. GA4 only recognises the exact name.
  • Personal data: parameter names that suggest an email address, phone number or name, which Google's terms don't allow.

Everything runs in your browser. The names you type aren't sent anywhere.

Planning events from scratch? Start with the measurement plan template, then the dataLayer specification template. If the names are already live and the data looks wrong, the GA4 mini audit finds out why.
