GA4 for health brands, clinics and health tech

On a health website, a page view can reveal something about a person. Marc Alexander sets GA4 up so you can measure what works without sending anything sensitive where it shouldn't go.

What you get.

  • A check of every tag: what it sends, and where
  • Page addresses, titles and search terms cleaned before they reach advertising platforms
  • A cookie banner and Consent Mode v2 tested, so nothing fires before a choice
  • Assessments, test kits, subscriptions and bookings tracked as the real journey
  • Bookings and enquiries counted as key events, alongside purchases
  • Server-side tagging where it gives you more control over what leaves the site
  • Documentation your team, and whoever handles data protection, can follow

How it works.

  1. Mini audit

Marc checks consent, what each tag sends and to whom, key events and attribution, and sends a written report ranking problems by risk and business impact.

  2. Full audit if needed

Where the setup needs a thorough review, the 38-point audit covers every tag, every journey and the ad platform connections.

  3. Fix and build

Consent, tracking and server-side work is quoted once the audit shows what's needed.

  4. Hand over

Documentation of what's collected and why, so your privacy policy can describe it accurately.

Straight answers.

Is analytics data on a health website personal data?

It can be, and more than people expect. A cookie ID with a visit to a page about a condition can say something about a person's health, which UK GDPR treats as special category data. That's why the work starts with what's collected, not with the reports.

Can we still use Google Ads and Meta?

Usually, with care. Both platforms limit how health businesses can use their data for advertising, and you shouldn't send them anything that reveals a condition. Conversions can still be measured, as long as what they carry is checked first.

Do we need Consent Mode v2?

If you advertise with Google to visitors in the UK or EEA, yes. It has to be set up so no analytics or advertising tag fires before the visitor chooses, and tested with the banner untouched. See Consent Mode v2.

Our journey is a quiz, then a test kit or a consultation. Can GA4 measure that?

Yes. GA4's ecommerce events can describe an assessment, a recommendation, a purchase and a booking, so the funnel matches what customers really do. The Hertility Health case study shows it in practice.

Where should we start?

With the mini audit, from £175. It checks consent and what your tags send before anything else. If you already know the setup needs a thorough review, go straight to the 38-point audit.

More detail: where health tracking goes wrong
  • Page addresses say too much. An address such as /conditions/menopause/symptoms, sent to an advertising pixel with a cookie ID, links a person to a health topic.
  • Forms leak. Default form tracking and session recording tools can pick up what people type, including symptoms.
  • Tags fire before consent. A tag set to fire on page load, ahead of the consent default, sets cookies before anyone has chosen.
  • The journey doesn't fit a shop. A quiz, a recommendation and a booking get forced into add to basket and purchase, and the reports stop making sense.

The GA4 and UK GDPR guide covers the wider rules in the UK. For US sites, see HIPAA, tracking pixels and GA4.

More detail: experience with health brands

For Hertility Health, a UK women's health company offering at-home hormone and fertility testing, Marc replaced a third-party consent tool with a custom banner supporting Consent Mode v2, built GA4 ecommerce tracking around the real journey from assessment to purchase and consultation, and drafted privacy policy wording for the advertising measurement used. The Hertility Health case study has the detail.

Start with the mini audit: it shows what your tags send, and to whom, before you spend on anything bigger.

What does your site fire before consent?

Paste a page address. The tracking checker shows what a first-time visitor triggers before agreeing to anything, ranked by how much it matters.
