For a US law firm, dentist, roofer or HVAC company, the best leads often don't fill in a form. They pick up the phone. If GA4 only counts forms, the marketing that drives calls looks like it isn't working.
Three levels of call tracking.
1. Clicks on a phone number. The simplest step: an event in GA4 when someone taps a tel: link. It's free, and on mobile it captures intent well. But a tap isn't a call. People tap by accident, hang up before it connects, or call later from another phone.
2. Calls from Google Ads. Google Ads can count calls from call ads, and calls to a Google forwarding number shown on your site to visitors who came from an ad. It records a conversion only when a call lasts long enough, 60 seconds by default. That covers paid search well, but nothing else.
3. Call tracking software. A call tracking service shows a different number to visitors from each source, or even to each visitor, and swaps it back to your main number when they call.
It can tell you which campaign, keyword or page led to a call, how long it lasted and, with recording, whether it was a real enquiry. That data can then be sent to GA4 and Google Ads.
Getting calls into GA4.
- Use one event name for calls, such as
phone_call, with parameters for the source of the number, the call length and whether it was answered. - Count real calls as the conversion, not taps. Taps are worth keeping as a separate, lighter event.
- Set a sensible length threshold. A 20-second call is rarely a lead. Pick a length that matches your business, and use the same one in GA4 and Google Ads.
- Send call outcomes back. When your team marks a call as a booked job, that can go back to Google Ads, so bidding favours searches that produce work, not just calls.
Common mistakes.
- Counting every tap on the number as a lead, which flatters mobile traffic.
- Counting the same call twice: once from Google Ads' own call tracking and again from call tracking software.
- Number swapping that breaks your listings, so the number on your Google Business Profile or in directories doesn't match your site. Swapping should only happen on your website.
- Recording calls without telling callers. Some states require everyone on a call to agree to recording, so a short message at the start is the safe default.
What to check.
- Tap the number on your site from a phone and look for the event in GA4's DebugView.
- Place a test call from an ad click and check it reaches GA4 and Google Ads once.
- Compare a month of call conversions with the calls your team logged.
